Is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Silver Coast. The place consists of the 'Praia' (the beach), Sitio an old town on top of a cliff and Perderneira, also located on top of a mountain. Sitio can be reached via a (detour) road as well as by cable car. But for sports enthusiasts there is also a hiking trail to the top. Nazaré is world famous for its waves that can reach heights of tens of meters on the clips of the Sitio. And a mecca for (professional) surfers.
Peniche is the southernmost town on the Silver Coast and is located on the peninsula of the same name. Northwest of Peniche is the fortified town of Óbidos and south the seaside resort of Lourinha on the Costa de Lisboa. In the far west of the peninsula is Cape Carvoeiro with a view of the Berlengas archipelago, one of the first natural areas in Portugal.
North of Peniche is Baleal. Baleal beach is one of the best and most famous surf spots in this region. Ferrel is directly adjacent to Baleal and Almagreira beach is a favorite place to test the surfboards and the waves. There are many surf schools in Baleal and Ferrel and every year, usually in the autumn, there are often national and international surf competitions; The Peniche region is a beautiful area for a quiet holiday on the Costa da Prata and not just for surfers.
The name Porto de Mós is thought to come from the time of the Roman occupation when the river Lena, which was still passable at the time, had a port (porto) here where millstones (mós) were loaded and unloaded, which were made in a quarry in the region. The centuries-long occupation of the Porto de Mós region is clearly visible in the Municipal Museum (Museu Municipal), which exhibits various fossils and dinosaur bones, as well as remnants of the human occupation such as the various stone axes (Paleolithic and Neolithic), coins and iron spears from Roman times.
The castle, located on the highest point, was rebuilt by order of King D. Sancho I in the 13th century and two centuries later it was turned into a palace fortress of beautiful and unusual design, which can still be seen today. Near Porto de Mós is the Parque Natural da Serra de Aire e Candeeiros, with limestone slopes that hide beautiful galleries in the caves, such as the open caves of Santo António, Alvados and Mira d`Aire. On the surface, among the traditional villages and mills of stone, there are still traces of the time when the dinosaurs lived here, in the form of traces left behind in Pedreira do Galinha; Roman remains can also be visited here, such as the beautiful street work in Alqueidão da Serra.
Nearest seaside resorts, approximately 13 km from Santa Catarina. 'Sao Martinho' and 'Salir' are situated around a bay on the Atlantic coast. The sea is therefore calmer and warmer in temperature than at other locations on the ocean. These places are therefore ideally suited for families with children and people who prefer the relative tranquility to the turbulent forces of the oceans. And it is exceptionally good and pleasant to stay here.
